Do they merit second chances?
Historically, one of HR's duties has been to weed out employment
candidates with criminal histories. Change is required now.
We assist those who genuinely desire a fresh start in ensuring that it
is a good one.
Second chances benefit those who have been incarcerated by giving them
the opportunity to experience the dignity of employment; the community
benefits by lowering crime and recidivism; and employers benefit by obtaining
access to talented individuals. Accepting this chance should be obvious because
everyone benefits from it.
Have you ever committed a mistake at work and worried that your line
manager might fire you? Fortunately, you don't experience this very frequently;
if you can say that you haven't, then congrats (Criminol, 2022).
Can they change if you give them another chance?
Skillsets
When an employee's difficulties are related to their skill set, it is preferable to wager that they should be given another chance. If a good employee has the appropriate attitude, it's simple to spend a small amount of money on training to help them advance their lagging skill set (Bannan, 2022).
Attitude
It can be difficult to evaluate an attitude issue. Giving
that person a second chance can make sense if you think the attitude issue
isn't too deep-seated or is the consequence of justified complaints.
Nevertheless, if you're dealing with someone who has developed a chronic
attitude of negativity or laziness or who has lost interest in your business or
their job, I wouldn't bet on them.
Behavior
types
Similar to issues with attitude, certain troubling
behavioral patterns call for a second opportunity while others do not. If
someone's quality or attention to detail has declined, that is typically a
fixable problem. Picking disputes with team members, on the other hand, may
indicate undesirable conduct that is more difficult to address.
Qualities
of the personality
If it turns out that an employee's problem is actually just their personality, and for some reason it seems to be showing up more frequently than it did previously in their job, they're generally not a good candidate for a second chance. Similar to when thinking about getting married, it's a bad idea to jump in and believe you can change your partner's, or in this case, the employee's, fundamental qualities (Labowitz, 2021).
Is it just in name or is it a second chance?
It's critical that you firmly believe giving someone a second
opportunity is the right course of action before you do so. Even though you
know deep down they don't deserve it, it's simple to extend a second
opportunity to someone you admire or feel loyal to.
Why do you plan to do something differently?
Doing the same thing repeatedly and expecting different results is the
definition of insanity. Giving a worker a second chance requires you to step up
your support for them.
Unbelievably, your leadership style and how you're going to be present
for them will matter more to their success than anything else. A completely
different message than not believing in them is sent if they realize that
you're personally committed to helping them turn things around.
What can you do to ensure that this second
chance is successful?
As an HR leader, has a variety of strategies to
step up assistance for team members. Can firstly devote more time and attention
to them. can use this time to advise and guide them or simply provide a safe
environment for them to express their emotions. Spending time with them will
deepen HRM's connection with them, regardless of what they decide to do with
it (Kucera, 2015).
The advantages of a second chance
·
Fostering a welcoming, diverse, and productive environment
·
Talent that is widely accessible but has typically gone untapped
by the general workforce.
·
A chance to show excellent corporate citizenship and strengthen
local communities (Severe, 2010).
Finally, make the
second opportunity a clean slate.
Second-chance employment benefits both individuals and businesses
while also strengthening our communities and society as a whole.
An effective strategy to end the cycle of economic hardship,
poverty, and incarceration that permeates many communities is to increase
inclusive hiring. Giving second-chance candidates a chance helps stabilize
communities while also helping people and families improve their financial
well-being. The local economy will benefit as a result, improving the
environment for doing business for all businesses. Businesses prosper when the
communities they are part of prosper as well. One way for businesses to ensure
the success of the communities in which they operate is through the provision
of second chances.
